About the Department
The Department of Commerce was started in the year 1982. From the inception of the department of commerce, everyone in the department has been striving to do their best to wear the crown of glory. The Department provides top quality education of Commerce to the youth of the rural area and to bring out their hidden potentialities by providing them ample opportunities for overall growth and development. In the year 2000-01, M.Com course was started by shedding evening section of B.Com degree course. During the year 2004-05, the Department of Commerce introduced the BBA degree course and the department is designated as Post Graduate Department of Commerce and Management. During the year 2009-10, B.Com., (Computer Applications) Course was started with the financial support of University Grants Commission and which has got a remarkable welcome in the private textile and garment export concerns especially in Karur and nearby textile towns. The students admitted in the course acquired skills in accounting. It has got a very good job potential and computer simultaneously in the textile export field. Further, in the year 2009 - 10, The Bharathidasan University approved the M.Phil. and Ph.D. in commerce both Part time and Full time after inspecting the department infrastructure facilities and its quality. Here in after the department is designated as Post Graduate and Research Department of Commerce. At present, the department has nine regular faculties, all of them Doctorates and five guest lecturers cum Ph.D. research scholar (Part-time) of the department.
Facilities
Library: The commerce department is having a separate department library with 2364 books in addition to the general library of the college. The books are regularly issued to the students of B.Com, B.Com (CA), M.Com, M.Phil and Ph.D students. Dr. R.Kannan, Associate Professor, Department of Commerce is given full incharge to look after the issue of books.
Instruments: The department is having five computer systems with printers and also with broad band internet facilities. The students can any time assess the internet even during the period of power cut as the department is electrified with inverters. With the help of Xerox machine owned by the department of commerce, the students can at any time get copies of any materials with reference to the subjects and as well as documents at free of cost.
A separate class room is allotted to equip LCD projector with computer system and screen with broad band facilities. Seminars, group discussions etc. are regularly undertaken to familiarise and simplify the subjects to various classes of students. The LCD projector is also regularly used by the department staff members as a teaching aid.
Journals: The department library is also subscribing 14 magazines, journals and international journals related to subject like Marketing, Finance, and Human Resource Management, business management, accounting standards, RBI bulletin etc. Some books containing research papers published by various publishers have also been subscribed to abreast the day to day affair of research activities by the students as well as the staff members.
